Tube Socks
Tube Socks
Learn to knit a pair of socks by knitting a long sock tube (20”-24”) and dividing it into two equal length sections! Class takes place over two sessions.
After separating the two tubes, students will learn:
- A wedge toe
- Afterthought heel
- Ribbed cuff
- Kitchener Stitch
This method is a great alternative for knitters who do not like knitting socks two-at-a-time but who often find it difficult to finish a pair of socks if knit individually. By knitting the whole length of the foot and leg of your sock first, you save all the “tricky” parts that require multiple steps until the end, when you just have 3 steps to finish for each sock.
Session #1: Saturday, November 4th, 4:30-6:00pm
Dividing a tube and securing live stitches; knitting at least one toe and one cuff; kitchener stitch
Session #2: Saturday, November 18th, 4:30-6:00pm
Deciding placement of afterthought heel; picking up stitches for the heel with magic loop or DPNs, unpicking half of one round, then knitting and decreasing for the afterthought heel; kitchener stitch.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate
Experience Required: Knitting in the round with either magic loop or double-pointed needles, kfb or make 1 increases, k2tog and ssk decreases.
Recommended Materials:
-Superwash fingering weight yarn with nylon content for durability (100 grams/400 yards) ***We recommend Ryan Yarn Twist Sock Or Hedgehog Fibres Twist Sock
-US 0, US 1, US 1.5, or US 2 needles, whichever knits into a fabric you are satisfied with – students may use either magic loop techniques, double-pointed needles, or 9” circular needles in the size of their choosing. ***Ryan recommends the 9” circulars to knit the tube, but it should be noted that toe and heel decreases will still require magic loop or DPNs to complete.
-Locking stitch markers (~4)
Preparing for Class (Option #1):
Knit a 60, 64, or 68 stitch fingering weight sock tube approximately 20-24”. Sock tubes can be toe-up (Ryan recommends Judy’s Magic Cast-On with a cast on of 32 stitches) or can be cuff-down (Most common cuff is either a 1x1 or 2x2 rib). We will divide our tube into 2 equal sections, securing all our live stitches, and will make sure each section has a toe and cuff before adding our afterthought heels. The wedge toe and afterthought heel are knitted identically in this class.
Preparing for Class (Option #2):
Knit a 64 stitch tube that’s at least 8” long with scrap yarn that you do not mind cutting. If you can knit 10-12” inches, you will be able to make one full sock from that. This option is if you do not have a completed 20-24” sock tube so you can still learn all the techniques with us.
